Ledger.com/Start — Official Ledger Wallet Setup Guide
Quick, secure, step-by-step instructions to set up your Ledger hardware wallet and Ledger Live. Suitable for Nano S, Nano S Plus, Nano X, and Stax. Follow the official steps and security practices to keep your assets safe.
Introduction
Why hardware wallets?
Security first
Hardware wallets like Ledger store your private keys inside a secure element on the device (offline). That means signing transactions can happen with your keys quarantined away from your computer or phone — greatly reducing exposure to remote hacks and malware.
Before you start
Unbox your Ledger and check packaging/serial number for tampering.
Have a computer or smartphone ready with internet access.
Keep a pen and the recovery sheet provided — never store your seed phrase digitally.
Step 1 — Download Ledger Live (official app)
Get the app
Always download Ledger Live from the official Ledger domain or your platform’s official store. Ledger Live is your management app for installing device apps, adding accounts, sending and receiving funds, and checking portfolio balances.
Install & verify
Go to the Ledger Live download page and choose your OS (Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS).
Install, launch Ledger Live, and follow on-screen first-run prompts.
Advanced users: verify the downloaded file’s signature/hash available on Ledger’s site.
Step 2 — Initialize your Ledger device
Create as new or restore a wallet
When prompted on the device, choose whether to create a new wallet (generate a new recovery phrase) or restore from an existing recovery phrase. For a new wallet: pick a PIN, write down the 24 words exactly, and confirm them when asked.
Rules for your recovery phrase
Write it down on paper — do not copy to cloud, text, or photo.
Keep multiple offline backups in secure places if possible.
Never share the phrase with anyone; Ledger support will never ask for it.
Step 3 — Install apps & add accounts
Manager & app installation
Use Ledger Live’s Manager to install coin apps on the device (e.g., Bitcoin, Ethereum). After installing the app, add an account in Ledger Live to start receiving or managing that asset.
Daily usage tips
Keep Ledger Live updated and install firmware updates only when prompted by the official software.
Never enter your recovery phrase into any website or application.
Troubleshooting, verification & support
Where to get help
If anything seems off — unexpected prompts, requests for your seed phrase, or unofficial emails — stop and consult Ledger’s official support pages immediately.
Only download Ledger software from ledger.com or official app stores. If an interface asks for your 24-word recovery phrase, it’s a scam — never share it.
